I Have been trying to figure out the major difference between SIS (safety instrumented system) and HIPPS (high integrity pressure protection system). Can somebody help out here?
1. HIPPS is an application-specific safety system to prevent over-pressurization of a pipeline, and resultant damage to plant and equipment whereas SIS provides a safe and orderly shutdown of a process.
2. Generally HIPPS system are SIL4 systems whereas SIS will be between SIL1-SIL3 System.
3. As the name itself suggest HIPPS is more to work on Pressure limitation whereas SIS included all types of field instruments for safe shutdown.
4. Only limited vendors are capable to provide HIPPS with SIL4 system ex: HIMA whereas there are many vendors who provide SIL1-3 Systems.
